This book was released in 1994, but this is the second edition. In this edition, the author introduces a new section titled « The studio, » which includes exercises for the reader. Pureandsimplewriting emphasizes that writing is a complex intellectual process, rather than simply a collection of verbal skills. The benefits of plain style over classic style are many, including freedom from anxiety. Plain style assumes that the writer has competence and can see the truth, whereas the classic style introduces qualification, refinement, and meditation on the concept of plain style. The classic writer wants to set themselves apart, as he or she does not believe that truth is common property. Thus, the writer must prove themselves as an individual, not an impostor of the plain style.
