John McPhee

American essay writers John McPhee wrote on a variety of subjects. His writings reflected his diverse interests and personal experiences, from lifting body development to geology. He also wrote about a number of environments, including the Atchafalaya River and the New Jersey wilderness.

The 1973 New Yorker essay « Travels in Georgia » is a fine example of his early works. In it, McPhee describes his road trip with ecologists who feed off roadkill. The pictogram at the top of the piece features a « weasel, » referring to a time he tried to eat one. The essay features vivid characters and beautiful language.

Thomas Sterns Eliot

American essay writers Thomas Sterns Eliot (1898-1974) were deeply aware of their history. He was raised in a loving family, but his early life was marked by a sense of homelessness. Eliot’s work deals with this phenomenon. He writes about the complexities of love and sexuality.

Eliot published Selected Essays 1917-1932, a collection of his literary criticism during the 1920s. In September 1932, he returned to the United States, leaving his wife in England. In the months following, they made the decision that they could not live together anymore. In order to get rid of the strained relationship, he asked a solicitor to draw up a « Deed of Separation. » Eliot seldom saw his wife.

Jenny Boully

Jenny Boully is an American essay writer whose work has been published in a number of anthologies. She holds a PhD in English from the Graduate Center of the City University of New York and currently teaches creative writing at Columbia College Chicago. Born in Thailand, she grew up in Texas before studying at the University of Notre Dame. Her work has been featured in numerous literary journals and has won several awards.

Boully’s essays are full of romance and draw parallels between falling in love and writing. She has recently been named a Guggenhem Fellow for General Nonfiction. She will speak at Virginia Tech about « Thinking in Fragments: How to Approach the Lyric Essay. »

Thomas Chabon

As one of America’s leading essayists, Michael Chabon has struggled to make his work more accessible to a broad audience. His writing style is characterized by long sentences and listed descriptions that reflect the wistfulness of his protagonist, Art. Although he often uses hyperbole and similes, he has the ability to convey his meaning without using clichés.

In his early works, Chabon used pop culture and pulp fiction as a vehicle for self-discovery and societal critique. For a few years, however, Chabon fell into a rut. He didn’t achieve the heights of his influences, but rather tried to imitate them. For example, his Sherlock Holmes story was just a glorified fan-fiction, and his Edgar Rice Burroughs homage didn’t add much to the genre. Chabon’s most recent work, Gentlemen of the Road, is an attempt to emulate his heroes.
