Explanatory research focuses on the underlying causes of the phenomena. This type of research is often closely related to descriptive research, and adds additional information to the object observed. For example, if the researcher is studying the brittleness of a material, an explanatory study would determine the causes of brittleness and provide a greater understanding of why it breaks. The results of this type of research will be more useful in predicting the behavior of similar objects.
